Wet room lighting and electrical safety zones
An open wet room has no shower tray or screen to define where water reaches, which changes how the electrical safety zones are applied compared with a standard bathroom.
What IP rating does wet room lighting need?
Lighting directly above or within the wet zone needs a minimum IP65 rating, because that area is treated as continuously exposed to water jets. Lighting elsewhere in the room typically needs IP44 as a minimum, in line with standard bathroom requirements.
Why zones work differently in an open wet room
UK wiring regulations define bathroom zones (0, 1 and 2) based on distance from a bath or shower. A wet room with no tray or enclosure has no fixed boundary to measure from, so the zones are applied from the shower head's actual spray pattern and the extent of the tanked floor, which a qualified electrician assesses on site rather than assuming from a generic bathroom plan.
IP ratings by area
As a working guide:
- Directly over or within the open shower zone: IP65 minimum, fully sealed against water jets.
- The rest of the wet room floor area: IP44 minimum, protected against splashing.
- Outside the wet zone entirely — for example above a vanity well clear of the spray: standard bathroom-rated fittings may be acceptable, confirmed by the electrician on site.
Sockets and switches
Shaver sockets are the only socket type generally permitted within a bathroom's zoned areas, and even these have position restrictions. Light switches within the room are typically pull-cord operated rather than wall-mounted rocker switches, unless positioned safely outside the zoned area.
Underfloor heating and electrical safety
Electric underfloor heating elements sit beneath the tile bed on top of the tanking membrane, within the floor build-up the manufacturer specifies, wired through an RCD-protected circuit. This is first-fix work carried out before tiling, not an afterthought retrofitted once the floor is finished.
